Author Creator Fields Indexing and Display

Sarah Smulligan edited this page May 25, 2023 · 11 revisions

This includes the names of people and groups primarily responsible for creating a work and responsible for some kind of contribution to it.

Some of the goals of author/creator indexing:

  1. Display all the authors and responsible on item page
  2. Allow users to search for more works by a particular author, either linked from a record or in advanced search/specific field search or in keyword search.

Author/Creator Fields

MARC field description
100aqbcdkj Person author
110abcdfgklnj Corporate author
111abcdfgklnpqj Meeting author (if the work was created as part of a conference)
700aqbcdjk:710abcdfgjkln:711abcdfgjklnpq Additional authors for display, may have other kinds of roles, so creators

Of note, there will be vernacular elements. These should be paired with the author's name in display.

Author/Creator Search

We will want:

  • Exact match search to return all items with this person's name in an author field. (note on exact matches, we'll have to see what happens when there is/isn't a vernacular form of some people's names)
  • A search field to search all author fields (1xx and 700/710/711). We won't subdivide into 1xx vs. 7xx.
  • Author fields all included in keyword search.

Author/Creator

Because title statements include a "statement of responsibility" with main author/authors, search results page will not display the author/creators (at least for now). Search results will display thesis department.

On item pages:

  • Author display 100aqbcdkj including vernacular. On item pages, this should link to a faceted search for that author's exact name.
  • Corporate Author display 110abcdfgklnj including vernacular. On item pages, this should link to a faceted search for that author's exact name.
  • Conference Author display 111abcdfgklnpqj including vernacular. On item pages, this should link to a faceted search for that author's exact name.
  • Additional Creators display 700aqbcdjk:710abcdfgjkln:711abcdfgjklnpq including vernacular. On item pages, this should link to a faceted search for that author's exact name.

Note: relators

Author/creators may have a subfield e which specifies their role, e.g. "conductor," "editor," etc. In the long term, we will want to display these. However, they're not in MVP/release.
