Why not go for a permissive license? (MIT, BSD, Apache, etc..)

As detailed in our justification against GPLv2+, it is the wish of the MDAnalysis core team that contributions to the library remain open and free. We see the copyleft clauses of LGPLv3+ as the best means of achieving this. It also more closely matches the original intent of the GPLv2+ contributions which were kindly donated to MDAnalysis over the years. As such, we believe that LGPLv3+ is the best middle ground license given the circumstances.
