About PRIME
To get better, faster, complete and accurate data to state and local public health departments so that they can take appropriate timely action.
PRIME stands for “Pandemic-Ready Interoperability Modernization Effort."
COVID-19 has highlighted the need for timely, accurate, and automated data that can be used for public health action and emergency response. PRIME is a multi-year collaboration between CDC and the U.S. Digital Service (USDS) to strengthen data quality and information technology systems in state and local health departments. PRIME is a four-year effort that will continue after COVID-19 is eradicated. The initiative will:
- Support laying the foundation for preparedness for future pandemics
- Support the implementation of solutions that can accommodate reporting of multiple, potentially novel disease types
Interoperability is the ability of health information systems to work together within and across organizational boundaries in order to advance the effective delivery of healthcare for individuals and communities.
The HITECH Act, passed in 2009, was a stimulus program resulting in $35 billion in investments for healthcare to implement Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems in a meaningful way, with the aim of advancing interoperability. The result of the Act was widespread adoption of EHR Systems, and the use of interoperability standards that existed.
