The parser currently builds a List<Integer> (requires boxing) to track bind variables. It then converts this to an int[] (requires unboxing) when creating the NativeQuery.
This change provides a simple collection backed by an int[].

@vlsi, any consideration for including this in 42.2.3 also? It is along the lines of the other performance improvements (reduced memory consumption and execution time) in the Parser class.

  1. +1 to @davecramer
  2. Even though this looks like an improvement, I would assume it would be hard to notice/measure. Do you have numbers to compare?
  3. The PR introduces a new List implementation, and there might be bugs there
  4. There are merge conflicts
  5. Merging this would require me to update Release notes for 42.2.3 #1238 (and I would like to avoid excessive paperwork)

Is there a compelling reason to add it now?

Simply that it is is line with other optimizations in parsing. Not super compelling.

Even though this looks like an improvement, I would assume it would be hard to notice/measure. Do you have numbers to compare?

It is certainly a small improvement. On the order of 10-100ns for 10 or fewer bind variables. It appears to be (very roughly) 10ns per bind variable. Even at 1000 bind variables it is only 1 microsecond. I am not certain how to get the memory allocation data out of JMH. I believe that in an 64bit jvm an int[] will be less memory than a same-sized Object[]. But again, the difference should be rather small.

The PR introduces a new List implementation, and there might be bugs there

It is not an actual List implementation. It only implements a very few methods and is really quite simple. There is also a unit test which covers the class pretty thoroughly.

There are merge conflicts

Appears to be in the TestCase adding reference to the new junit test. This is easily remedied.

@bokken , is this "overflow conscious code"?

it should be overflow safe enough. the largest this safely supports is an array with ~1.4 billion elements. As of java 9 or 10 (when compact string project implemented), a String can only have 1 billion characters in it.

Well, the reality with pgjdbc development is there's a lot of options to defeat client applications by innocent changes to the driver code.

Would you share IntBenchmark as well?

Memory impacts are very small as long as the value (index into sql length of the bind variable) is < 128 (cached Integer values). Then it becomes ~16 bytes per bind variable.

Well, the reality with pgjdbc development is there's a lot of options to defeat client applications by innocent changes to the driver code.

My point was that a List implementation can be quite complicated with iterators, spliterators, sublists, removes, etc. This class is quite simple because it only needs to be able to add, retrieve, clear, and convert to an int[].
I certainly do not want to introduce instability to consumers.

I perfectly get that.

This class is quite simple because it only needs to be able to add, retrieve, clear, and convert to an int[].

The thing is the class is "new" and one should analyze failure cases for the new class.

I agree. I tried to rebase (as you had suggested earlier) and all of a sudden your commit of the CommandComplete stuff showed up.
I am accustomed to doing merges rather than rebases, so it is quite likely I have simply done something wrong. However, I have no idea how to undo it now.

Here's what I have with ParseStatement.bindExecuteFetch benchmark (see https://github.com/pgjdbc/benchmarks/blob/436694736a342d39864704c5e892f9b237e0dd4f/src/main/java/org/postgresql/benchmark/statement/ParseStatement.java#L95 ):

Note that ±Error is quite high for response times, thus only allocation difference is actually significant here (Java 1.8u152, PostgreSQL at the localhost):

Benchmark (bindCount) (unique) Mode Cnt master Error PR1244 Error Units
time 1 true avgt 10 60 ± 4 61 ± 2 us/op

time 100 true avgt 10 278 ± 22 276 ± 15 us/op
allocation 100 true avgt 10 32760 ± 1 31384 ± 1 B/op
time 1000 true avgt 10 2509 ± 123 2468 ± 154 us/op
allocation 1000 true avgt 10 353775 ± 1563 331785 ± 1467 B/op

For the fun sake I've tested unique=false (==reuse SQL statement) in a pgjdbc master branch:

Benchmark (bindCount) (unique) Mode Cnt Score Error Units
time 1 false avgt 10 54 ± 1 us/op
allocation 1 false avgt 10 984 ± 0 B/op
time 100 false avgt 10 116 ± 3 us/op
allocation 100 false avgt 10 7400 ± 0 B/op
time 1000 false avgt 10 805 ± 19 us/op
allocation 1000 false avgt 10 79865 ± 4 B/op

Of course we want to eliminate excessive resource usage in the driver, however proper use of SQL (at the application side) results in much better improvement.

So from what I am reading this is a very minor improvement?

@bokken

bokken commented Jul 11, 2018

It is a minor improvement. Per sql statement parsed, it is ~10ns per bind variable and ~16 bytes per bind variable at position > 128 in the "native" sql satement.
Yes, having constant sql that remains in statement cache is even better.

What is the threshold for performance improvements to be interesting? While this benefit is small, the change is also quite small.

@davecramer
Member

There is no "threshold" really. I had no issue with the PR, I took issue with the timing and the tangent that it led us down while we were trying to get 42.2.3 out the door.

I think this is going to prompt the project to become more organized about what goes in and when and if something gets pushed to the next release. Any thoughts around how to accomplish that ? The core postgreSQL project has a notion of commit fests. They even have an app for what gets in and what stays in. https://commitfest.postgresql.org/19/

I would be a big fan of having regularly scheduled releases.

@davecramer

I'm in the process of setting up projects hopefully this will help.

some thoughts:

We have to specify what is going into a release and not allow creep .

We need to get ruthless about getting feedback. If we request it and don't receive it then the PR gets moved to the next release.

Aging a PR. After a while it will get moved to the ice box. I'll setup a project for this. This is usually where PR's go to die.

Ideally someone would pick it up and work on it.

Thoughts ?

We have to specify what is going into a release and not allow creep .

+1 to regularly scheduled releases. It's helpful both from the perspective of contributors and users. Contributors get to know that once a PR is merged then they'll have have their PR in the core released driver at a fixed time. Users get the benefit of having a schedule of when they should be following up on driver updates that hopefully they can tie into their software lifecycle.

We need to get ruthless about getting feedback. If we request it and don't receive it then the PR gets moved to the next release.

I cycle in and out but would happen to be called out if reviewers are needed for something. I've noticed that most of the things I'd chime in on have already been closed out by the time I follow up so quieter than usual lately (and I'm generally on the side of simpler code vs. squeezing perf gains :)).

Aging a PR. After a while it will get moved to the ice box. I'll setup a project for this. This is usually where PR's go to die.

+1 to this as well. Nobody wants PRs hanging around forever. Ditto for issues. Having the open set reflect what's active would help existing and new contributors focus there efforts on what people actually want. And if something does get booted the original author can always re-submit, hopefully after lining up a reviewer.

I know that the performance improvements in this PR are on the edge, but are there any plans to reinvigorate them?

@davecramer

@pwagland curious why this interests you given the small performance benefits. Are there other benefits ?

@pwagland

Thanks for the quick answer @davecramer!

There is nothing specific that we want this for, I actually found it while looking for another issue (#1311) where we add potentially tens of thousands of parameters. This PR is not the thing that makes this slow! :-)

One of the things that we are looking at is how to minimise the number of allocations that we make, this would also not really make much difference there, it will just do a smaller generation in 99.9% of our queries, since Integer.valueOf() returns the cached values for "small" offsets, and we rarely have more than ten parameters, let alone, more than 128.

I was just curious, since in #1244 (comment) there was a discussion about what to do with old PR's which this should be considered now I guess? And #1244 (comment) kind of implied that the PR was mostly OK, so I'm not quite sure what else would be needed for this PR, from there the question.

As we are on Java 8+, should we consider using java.util.stream.IntStream#builder() instead of coding our own int-optimized int array builder?

vlsi commented May 30, 2022

Ah, it seems that IntStream#builder().add().stream().toIntArray() would incur significant overhead :-(

I guess it should be IntList to enforce it keeps the order of elements, and it could probably move to a top-level.
IntList would be helpful for #1946

@bokken , I've resurrected the PR. I think it should be good to merge now.

Any thoughts, comments?

It's actually size.
It would be good to rename ensureSize(int size) too.

### [`v42.7.3`](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/blob/HEAD/CHANGELOG.md#4273-2024-04-14-145100--0400)

##### Changed

- chore: gradle config enforces 17+ [MR #3147](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/3147)

##### Fixed

- fix: boolean types not handled in SimpleQuery mode [MR #3146](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/3146)
    - make sure we handle boolean types in simple query mode
    - support uuid as well
    - handle all well known types in text mode and change `else if` to `switch`
- fix: released new versions of 42.2.29, 42.3.10, 42.4.5, 42.5.6, 42.6.2 to deal with `NoSuchMethodError on ByteBuffer#position` when running on Java 8

### [`v42.7.2`](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/blob/HEAD/CHANGELOG.md#4272-2024-02-21-082300--0500)

##### Security

- security: SQL Injection via line comment generation, it is possible in `SimpleQuery` mode to generate a line comment by having a placeholder for a numeric with a `-`
such as `-?`. There must be second placeholder for a string immediately after. Setting the parameter to a -ve value creates a line comment.
This has been fixed in this version fixes [CVE-2024-1597](https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2024-1597). Reported by [Paul Gerste](https://github.com/paul-gerste-sonarsource). See the [security advisory](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/security/advisories/GHSA-24rp-q3w6-vc56) for more details. This has been fixed in versions 42.7.2, 42.6.1 42.5.5, 42.4.4, 42.3.9, 42.2.28.jre7. See the security advisory for work arounds.

##### Changed

- fix: Use simple query for isValid. Using Extended query sends two messages checkConnectionQuery was never ever set or used, removed [MR #3101](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/3101)
- perf: Avoid autoboxing bind indexes by [@bokken](https://github.com/bokken) in [MR #1244](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/1244)
- refactor: Document that encodePassword will zero out the password array, and remove driver's default encodePassword by [@vlsi](https://github.com/vlsi) in [MR #3084](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/3084)

##### Added

- feat: Add PasswordUtil for encrypting passwords client side [MR #3082](https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/3082)
