I've been working on quite a big refactor which I'd like to finish up first:
#2252

I'll leave the PR open for the time being. I should finis #2252 by the end of January

Well #2252 is still open, not sure if it will ever be finished.

My implementation of this has the issue where it can't clear .persist()-ed mocks, and I don't have the energy to get familiar with this repo to find out why it happens and how to do it better. I have been using a private fork with this fix applied and other than that it seems to work. I'm leaving this PR open, maybe someone wants to continue the work.
