Project TeamMaker

This is the repository for project TeamMaker released with MIT Licence

Info

Project TeamMaker is what I have produced within a few weeks for ICT 333 - IT Project.

It's a system which, eventually, will helps course coordinators, tutors and managers with breaking people into equal teams.

The wireframes of the system is uploaded at google sites.

The workflow of the system, in short, go thru the following processes

  1. Admin sets up new project
  2. Admin sets up skill to consider during teammaking
  3. Import student's data
  4. Launch project and invite students to log in.
  5. Students fill in their skills data
  6. Students make nominations of people they want to group together with. (Not implemented)
  7. Once the deadline is over for collection, the admin start creating rules and making groups.
  8. Once the admin has fixed the teams, an email is sent out notifying the students of the allocation (Not implemented)
  9. The members can submit feedback to the allocation until the end of Feedback deadline. (Not implemented)

This repository has been created so that the students of the Murdoch University, Australia who are taking up this project for further development can easily reference to it.

Feel free to fork this repo even if you are not a student for whatever purposes.

I will not continue developing this system. However, for any questions or issues, go ahead and submit your issues. I will be able to provide guidance or answer the questions related to the system.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Download

Download the latest update (currently v0.5) and Unzip at destination.

Or check out from github by running git clone git://github.com/mmhan/TeamMaker.git in terminal at the destination.

Step 2: Configure database.

First of all, you must have created a clean database that you have access to. Import the database using the provided file at sqls/fulldb.sql

After the database has been imported. Create a copy of the app/config/database.php.default as database.php in the same folder.

Go to line 76 and edit the $default variable with your database configuration.

var $default = array(
    'driver' => 'mysql',
	    'persistent' => false,
    	'host' => 'localhost', //change this to the ip address if the database is located in another server
	    'login' => 'user', //change this to database user name
	    'password' => 'password', //change this to the database's password
	    'database' => 'database_name', //change this to databse name
	    'prefix' => '', //do not change.
   );

Step 3: Configure write permissions

There are a number of folders that is used by the system to temporarily store some data such as cache, logs and session and also a folder where uploaded CSVs will be stored.

They should be writable by Apache's user (usually www-data or www or apache). Either chmod g+w or chown these files.

The folders that should be writable by Apache are:

  1. app/tmp (and all the folders in it)
  2. app/webroot/csv_files

After this step is done, you should be able to see the home page with no error.

Step 4: Run Initial sequence

For ACL to work, you must visit the following URLS for the initial sequence to run.

  1. http://www.example.com/teammaker/users/build_acl
  2. http://www.example.com/teammaker/users/init_db

Do not pay attention to what the screen outputs.

Step 5: Logging in to the system.

At this stage you system is ready. You should be able to log in to the system using the login access provided below.

Email : su@example.com

Password : 123123

Configuring Cron Job

The system uses a regular CRON job that will upgrade projects from one stage to another. It must be set-up so that the URL http://www.example.com/teammaker/projects/cron is called by either wget or curl at least every one hour.

For further Development

(To students who's taking up this project for their FYP)

  1. Learn MVC and CakePHP
  2. Know Git and GitHub
  3. Javascript, HTML & CSS
    • app/webroot/js/make_team.js is generated using CoffeeScript. You might as well check it out too.
  4. Fork this.
