Releasing Kustomize is somewhat complicated because of the multiple modules involved. A fair amount of tooling exists in the repo to make this easier today. However, those tools are only usable by a small number of people in practice, and the process overall is still quite time-consuming.

Goals:

  • The process should be as automated as possible. As much as possible should happen in remote tasks rather than on the maintainer's laptop.
  • Any Approver should be able to a release; the process should not require repo admin rights
  • Existing SIG Release tooling should be re-used to the extent possible
  • Remove our reliance on an outdated GoReleaser version: Kustomize stuck on outdated goreleaser version #4542
  • automate the kustomize-in-kubectl update [it is now scripted; does not necessarily happen immediately after release]
  • Improve release note generation to reference PRs appropriately Converge local and cloud gorelease scripts, improve release notes #4537

The Kubernetes project currently lacks enough contributors to adequately respond to all issues and PRs.

This bot triages issues and PRs according to the following rules:

  • After 90d of inactivity, lifecycle/stale is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/stale was applied, lifecycle/rotten is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/rotten was applied, the issue is closed

You can:

  • Mark this issue or PR as fresh with /remove-lifecycle stale
  • Mark this issue or PR as rotten with /lifecycle rotten
  • Close this issue or PR with /close
  • Offer to help out with Issue Triage

Please send feedback to sig-contributor-experience at kubernetes/community.

The current release process is documented here: https://github.com/kubernetes-sigs/kustomize/tree/master/releasing

The first step for this issue would be to read through the current release process and write up a proposal for how we can automate it.

To do:

  • Analyse current release pipeline and gather references
  • Decide the scope of the project (how far we automate?)
  • Break down release pipeline into stages
  • Publish RFP & review
  • Execute implementation
  • Test & review implementation
  • Feedback gathering
  • Discover bugs & improvements

Hi @natasha41575, I have created a brainstorming board on Miro since I don't think GH can cover interactions I wanted. Would you be comfortable to join and give some comments on the board?

Let me know if there's anyone I should invite 😃

Splitting task into 2:

  1. Developing dependency pinning and dependency update scripts (Automate dependency pinning and updating script for Kustomize #5404)
  2. Develop release process automation (Add release automation for api, kyaml, cmd/config, and kustomize CLI #5449)
