My name is Josh. I've been working as a SWE for the last decade mostly focussed on backend infrastructure and foundational work. I currently work for Stripe where I am focussed on improving the scalability, reliability, efficiency, and operational standards regarding their massive MongoDB fleet.

• My depth is in Ruby, Golang, Erlang/Elixir, backend services, and CP-style databases. I am particularly experienced with working on reliability, scaling, and performance initiatives pertaining to large-scale distributed systems.

While I don't do as many projects in my spare time as I used to, over the past couple of years I've:

• Authored a spying/stubbing library for testing Ruby code
• Maintained the canonical vim language plugin for the Elixir programming language
• Published a game for a Game Jam (which you can play here!)
• Developed a toolkit for analyzing data from and automating workflows related to BoardGameGeek
• Built a simulator for the board game Metro X
• Created a program which can produce photo mosaics
• Deployed a Rails app which allowed my friends and me to more easily view our combined boardgame collection for game nights (screenshot)
• Created a way for our team to control our central Spotify instance from Slack during the workday

Outside of my work:

• I am an active musician and have 20+ years of experience playing guitar
• I play a lot of board games
• I enjoy training to become fluent in Spanish with comprehensible input
• I like to read fantasy and graphic novels. My favorite fantasy series include Mistborn, The Farseer Trilogy, and The First Law. My favorite graphic novels include Bone, Y: The Last Man, and Locke & Key
