Make it work with Sphinx>=1.6 again. Note, the build failures on travis are due to sphinx-doc/sphinx#6245 |

Sphinx deprecated the
sphinx.ext.mathbase.setup_mathfunction in 1.8 and replaced it byadd_html_math_renderer.This means we have also to increase our sphinx dependency to be
>=1.8.
