A Personal Statement

I'm sophisticated, witty, charming, good looking and intelligent. At least, that's what my Mum tells me. More seriously, I have a BE(hons) in Software Engineering and I've been working full time in the industry since 2016 and interning at various companies since 2014. My background is in C#, C++ and Typescript/JavaScript.

Previous Work

Jobs

Envoy: November 2020 - current

Google: September 2018 - February 2020

Envoy: May 2017 - August 2018

Internships

Mozilla: November 2017 - February 2018

Jade: November 2015 - February 2016

Orion Health: November 2014 - February 2015

Currently, I'm employed at Envoy Advanced Technologies, where I'm working on a number of projects including React Native PWAs for Australian news publications, Building Certification Software, and livestock accounting software for AAco.

At Google I was working on Chromium, with a particular focus on offline web apps on desktop. My contributions included design and implementation work on the Badging API, implementing the custom tab bar for desktop PWAs, and designing and implementing a prototype of a new File Handling API for Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). This work was largely C++ based, though I also did standardization work for these APIs.

Before Google, I was (again) employed at Envoy Advanced Technologies where I worked on a number of projects, including a piece of enterprise software for managing building certifications (BCS), using ASP.NET and Knockout; a cross platform mobile app for building inspectors, using Xamarin Forms; an iOS app written in Swift to showcase a new streaming algorithm; and a new corporate travel product, written in dotnet core 2.0, React and TypeScript.

Over the 2016/2017 summer, I interned in the Mozilla media team, which involved work with encrypted video playback and content decryption modules. This was almost entirely in C++ (with a little side of JavaScript, for tests). In particular I added sub sample encryption support to EME playback of MP4 (Bug 1318792) and WebM videos (Bug 1306477), which included some major refactors and minor bugfixes.

For the 2015/2016 break I interned at Jade, as a part of a Callaghan grant, doing researchy stuff. This work was mostly in C# (for the backend) with a side of JavaScript for an Angular.js frontend. I worked on a few different aspects of a project called ‘OnSide;’ an app for helping farmers keep track of risks and contractors on farms.

My Education

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

start 2016 - mid 2016: As part of an exchange program with my home university.

  • Studied at HKUST, the top rated university in Asia (well, according to their website).
  • Travelled around Asia, generally having a rather good time.
  • Received the Prime Minister's Scholarship for Asia (PMSA).
  • Received the UC Outward Mobility Scholarship.

University of Canterbury

start 2013 - end 2016: Graduated December 2016 with a Bachelor of Engineering and First Class Honors.

  • Completed my first course in my third year of high school, getting an A+ through STAR (a program high schools run that lets you sit University papers for free).
  • Started work on getting myself a degree in 2013. Fully enrolled and started crossing off courses I needed for the intermediate year, while remaining a part-time student at Unlimited (see below).
  • My GPA, as of graduation was 7.55 (an A- is 7 while an A is 8).

Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti (Unlimited or UPT)

start 2009 - end 2013:

  • School dux in 2013.

Projects

Links to my BitBucket and GitHub profiles. Following is a list of a some of my side projects, which are in varying stages of completion. A link to live versions of the projects are available on the Github pages, where applicable.

  • Progrssive: An PWA for reading RSS feeds, written with TypeScript and React. It works offline.
  • NZ Topo: A PWA for viewing NZ topographic maps and planning trips. It works offline. Started the project to learn Svelte and because I wanted an offline maps app in the backcountry.
  • Discoverer: A simple music discovery site I wrote to learn React.
  • Bombs Away: A game and physics engine I've been writing in TypeScript.
  • BuildingDetector/ResearchProject: Two projects which together form a rudimentary building detector that I built for my honors project.
