Rationale for this change

Fixes a bug, cleans up some code and improves performance for empty string:

equal_string_scalar_empty_512
                        time:   [802.37 ns 806.33 ns 810.99 ns]
                        change: [-21.974% -20.704% -19.429%] (p = 0.00 < 0.05)
                        Performance has improved.
Found 11 outliers among 100 measurements (11.00%)
  1 (1.00%) low severe
  4 (4.00%) low mild
  2 (2.00%) high mild
  4 (4.00%) high severe
