Introduction

Swapsea was created for the 2012/13 Australian Life Saving season by two members of North Bondi SLSC. Originally written as a PHP app embedded in the club's own Wordpress-based website, other clubs soon wanted it. Two years later, it was completely rewritten as a Rails app. Over the following five seasons, features grew and Swapsea expanded interstate. In 2019, it was decided to make Swapsea Open Source, while still providing a hosted service for a very modest fee. This aligned Swapsea with the broader Life Saving movement and more easily welcomes contributions from fellow lifesavers.

Swapsea vs SLS Members Area

Swapsea continues to enjoy support because of some key features that don't exist with the national Surf Life Saving Members Area such as calendar integration, Patrol Captain visibility of details, automatic SMS reminders and of course a more robust swaps feature. For as long as these features (and others) are better in Swapsea, it will remain relevant.

Roadmap

We'd love to see:

  • Proactive Swap nudging to encourage members to Make an Offer
  • API integration to Surfguard for Substitutes
  • API integration to Surfguard for activation/Single-sign-on
  • Single Sign on with Facebook/Google/Instagram (assuming your email matches that in Surfguard

We welcome your contribution to the above and would love to hear of your ideas to make Swapsea even better!
