Openroast has been updated to incorporate the latest freshroastsr700 driver v0.2.3, which addresses Openroast issue #57, namely, in Windows and Ubuntu, you can now connect the hardware after having launched the app. If you are happy with v1.2.0rc3, there is no significant improvement in v1.2.1 other than addressing issue #57.

How to install

Windows 10

The Windows installation packages are named Openroast_1.2.1_Win10_xxbit.zip below. Please download the appropriate ZIP file (most modern machines will run the 64-bit version, a 32-bit version is provided to run on older hardware), then open it by double-clicking on it once downloaded. There is a README file in the package you can consult, or take a look at the Windows install walkthrough.

Mac

To install the OS X version, a disk image file (DMG) is supplied for download below called Openroast.1.2.1.Mac.OS.X.Installer.dmg. Please download that, double-click the DMG to mount it, and follow the instructions in the README file. Or take a look at the Mac install walkthrough.

This is this first official Openroast 1.2 release candidate. Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 10 32-bit, and Mac OS X installers are included.

Improvements since Openroast 1.0 and 1.1

  • a significant re-factoring of the freshroastsr700 driver, which has resulted in
    • greatly lightened CPU load
    • improved temperature control performance
  • extensive installer packaging automation work, not significant to end-users directly, but greatly facilitating further maintenance and updates of this application by future developers and maintainers.

How to install

Windows 10

The Windows installation packages are named Openroast_1.2.0rc3_Win10_xxbit.zip below. Please download the appropriate ZIP file (most modern machines will run the 64-bit version, a 32-bit version is provided to run on older hardware), then open it by double-clicking on it once downloaded. There is a README file in the package you can consult, or take a look at the Windows install walkthrough.

Mac

To install the OS X version, a disk image file (DMG) is supplied for download below called Openroast.1.2.0rc3.Mac.OS.X.Installer.dmg. Please download that, double-click the DMG to mount it, and follow the instructions in the README file. Or take a look at the Mac install walkthrough.

Known Issues

  • On Windows and Ubuntu systems, the roaster must be connected via USB before launching Openroast. This is because the auto_connect routine in the underlying driver fails establish a connection when hardware is detected post-launch. It is assumed to not be an issue on Mac machines at this time, because the problem does not manifest when tested on a Macbook Pro 2016 edition.

Version 1.2.0a9 - Windows 10 32-bit installer

This is a test release to verify that existing Openroast functionality remains functional in the Windows 10 32-bit environment (as compared to Openroast 1.1). This package is slightly improved over the Win 10 64-bit 1.2.0a4 package, in that the installation package has a readme and drivers included - the Openroast app code itself has not changed.

The Windows installation package is named Openroast_1.2.0a9_Win10_32bit.zip below. Please download the ZIP file, then open it by double-clicking on it once downloaded, and follow the instructions in the README file. Once installed, you'll find the application shortcut in your Start pane area under 'Recently added' as well as under All Programs / O in the expanded app menu.

Note that this package was not tested with a connected Freshroast SR700 roaster. the app was verified to be nominally functional without connecting to hardware. Users should post any issues found in the issues section of this project.

Pre-release

This is the first alpha release for Openroast v1.2.0, alpha 7, that supports OS X. To install the OS X version, a disk image file (DMG) is supplied for download below called Openroast 1.2.0a7 Mac OS X Installer.dmg. Please download that, double-click the DMG to mount it, and follow the instructions in the README file.

(Windows users should continue to use 1.2.0a4, as no code changes have been made since v1.2.0a4.)

This alpha has been tested on a 2011 Macbook Pro running Yosemite, as well as a 2016 Macbook running Sierra (using a Minix USB C multiport adapter to connect to the roaster).

Note that you will need to install a driver package, in addition to the Openroast app, to use Openroast 1.2 on Macs. This is unavoidable. Please consult the README included in the DMG file for details.

Version 1.2 Alpha 4 - Early build with Windows 10 64-bit Installer

This is a test release to verify that existing Openroast functionality remains functional in the Windows 10 environment (as compared to Openroast 1.1). The code has been extensively refactored to incorporate the latest improvements made to the underlying driver (freshroastsr700 v0.2.1). This build allows Openroast to use the new PID controller and the underlying driver is expected to be much easier on your processor than previous builds.

The Windows Installer, at 31MB, is named Openroast_1.2.0a4_1.2.0a4.zip below. Please download the ZIP file, then open it by double-clicking on it once downloaded, and run the EXE file you find there. Once installed, you'll find the application shortcut in your Start pane area under 'Recently added' as well as under All Programs / O in the expanded app menu.

The installer has been lightened as much as possible, given the underlying dependence on Python and PyQt5. PyQt5 is a huge system, and a large number of elements were manually stripped out of it to reduce the overall size. This may cause a number of issues that should be reported as they are discovered.

Openroast Version 1.0.0

Updates include:

  • Rewritten roaster controller code, which has been broken out into its own python module to be released separately.
  • All FreshroastSR700 bases should work with this version.
  • Minor bug fixes/graphical improvements.

Drivers

Windows

The original application provided from the manufacturer should be installed as it includes the necessary drivers. The original application can be found here.

Mac

There is currently poor driver support for the FreshRoastSR700 and Mac. Although Openroast will run on most versions of OS X, not all versions have decent driver support. The supplied drivers are not supported by Openroast and will NOT work on El Capitan. For Yosemite, driver signing will have to be disabled to allow the supplied driver to work. This is not recommended as it allows other drivers to be run without requiring them to be signed by their developers. There are paid drivers available that are signed, but they do not allow full functionality of Openroast. Below are the steps to get the drivers working on OS X Yosemite.

  1. Download, unzip, and install the package named Mac_Driver.zip
  2. Open up terminal and run the following code to disable driver signing (again, this is not recommended) sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1"
  3. Reboot
