DiMiCamp Workshop: Memory

Intro

Init & Run

  • Open empty folder in VS Code
  • Install extension: Spring Initializr Java Support
  • Open command "terminal" with [Ctrl + Shift + p] and type "Spring"
  • Select "Spring Initializr: Create a Gradle project...", enter the following options and generate the project into the currently opened folder
    • Spring Boot version: 2.7.3
    • Language: Java
    • Group id: any, e.g. "net.coderdojo.linz"
    • Artifact id: "memory"
    • Packaging type: Jar (doesn't matter)
    • Java version: 18
    • Dependencies: Spring Web
  • Open MemoryApplication and click on the Play button in the top right to run the app

Server Status

  • Open frontend: https://6nygpe.csb.app/
  • Check Server status on the top - it should still state "Kein Server gefunden" (unfortunately I couldn't differentiate server not running from CORS)
  • Quickly explain CORS and why the server is not reachable because of it
  • Allow all CORS origins in the MemoryApplication.java

  • Now the status bar should state "/status nicht gefunden" -> implement this endpoint in a new controller

  • Status bar should be green now

Game Options

  • Now the game is asking for some game options
  • Create a DTO that will be sent to the user. Currently, it only contains one option but it can/will be extended during the workshop

  • Create a new controller GameController with a GET endpoint that simply returns the game options

  • Restart the server & reload the frontend
  • Now it is possible to enter a player name, but the endpoint for starting the game is still missing

Start the game

  • Create a new DTO: GameRequest. This contains the data, the frontend is sending to the server when starting a game

  • Create two new DTOs: PlayerResponse & GameResponse. They contain the data, the server is sending back to the frontend when starting a game

  • Extend the GameController with the endpoint for starting a game

  • Create a new service that will generate cards & players. Cards/emojis will be hardcoded for the first iteration but we'll improve that soon. Emojis can be copied from https://tiny.one/emojis - simply select 4 of them and repeat them

  • Now it should be possible to start the game.

Making a move

  • For being able to make a move, we need to store the currently running games somewhere. We'll simply keep them in memory for now, but this is of course not ideal.
  • Create a new pojo that contains the data of the current game. I changed it a bit when comparing it to the DTO, to show why we are using a DTO

  • Move the start game logic to the service instead of the controller and make generateCards & initPlayers private and create the corresponding constructors in the DTOs.

  • Add a list to the service that keeps a reference to all games

End of Game & Winner

  • Now we need to inform the client if the game is over and thus, somebody has won
  • Add a field winner to the Game which will be null if the game is still going on

  • Next, we need to determine the winner in the GameService. Add a new method determineWinner to the GameService

  • Let kids find out which problem we have with this method (it does not recognize if two persons have won) and fix it. We should then store a list of winners in the Game pojo.

Mutliplayer Support

  • Adjust the game options to allow 2 players
  • Notice, that the game doesn't work properly because player one is always the selected one
  • Set the next player in the makeMove method

Next

  • Don't always return the same cards - have a big list and return some random cards

Thoughts

  • The code is by far not ideal - I was kinda tired and not feeling too well when writing it. I hope it is still ok for you.
  • I am using streams quite a few times. Maybe it would be easier for the kids if we replace them with for loops on the go

Bonus

The below things can be implemented if there is still time left

  • Define the game options in a properties file
  • Validate the request body of the POST /game endpoint with Springs @Valid
  • Use a database to store games
  • Load cards via an HTTP request instead of copying them
