I think it could really help this project if we could start accepting some form of sponsorships, such as Open Collective or Tidelift.

I also recently looked into what it would mean to "lift the package" using Tidelift:

As far as I understood, this would be the things required to do that:
https://tidelift.com/about/lifter-tasks
Which doesn't look to complicated and they suggest to link the github sponsor button to https://tidelift.com/lifter/search/npm/@xmldom%2Fxmldom .

(Of course it doesn't answer the question of how the money would be distributed between maintainers or the legal aspects of that.)

In case there is somebody with experience on any of those aspects, please use this issue to add any valuable information.

At the moment from my perspective this is not only about potentially getting money for the work we are doing, but also to be more attractive to contributors, so it's also related to #296
