CSS Color 4 is now in good shape. The specification is a substantial update (compared to CSS Color 3) in functionality, precision, and clarity. Other specifications are referencing it, both CSS WG specs and others, such as HTML for Canvas 2D.

It is implemented and shipped in WebKit in its entirety, and is now being implemented in Gecko and Chromium as well. It is also implemented in JavaScript libraries such as color.js, Python libraries such as Coloraide and in PostCSS

Test coverage in WPT is good (9k subtests), and the spec is fully annotated for WPT so each tested section has links to tests and test results.

Conformance to CSS Color 4 is part of Interop 2022 as Color Spaces and Functions

Horizontal review is complete. Several aspects of CSS Color 4 were discussed at the Color Workshop.

There are (currently) 4 open issues, 198 closed, and most new issues are raised by implementers.

Last /TR publication was 28 April 2022; the changelog is up to date and shows 4 changes since then, and I just requested republication as WD to make that zero.

Its time to move to CR.

The CSS Working Group just discussed Color 4 CR, and agreed to the following:

  • RESOLVED: Republish Color 4 and 5
  • RESOLVED: Color 4 to CR when timing permits
The full IRC log of that discussion <TabAtkins> Topic: Color 4 CR
<TabAtkins> github: https://github.com//issues/7393
<TabAtkins> Rossen_: Looks like you wanted to ask for additional resolutions?
<TabAtkins> chris: Last week we made some Color 4 and 5 resolutions
<castastrophe_> late logging onto IRC but I'm a 1 for attending as well
<TabAtkins> chris: I wanted to request a new WD
<TabAtkins> chris: Not many changes from a couple months ago, but want an up-to-date WD
<TabAtkins> chris: Takes at least a week for CR
<TabAtkins> Rossen_: So repubbing Color 4 and 5, what changes?
<TabAtkins> chris: Some changes we agreed on last week; Color 5 punted color-contrast() to Color 6
<TabAtkins> Rossen_: Objections to republishing?
<TabAtkins> RESOLVED: Republish Color 4 and 5
<TabAtkins> chris: Color 4 has good test results and is being implemented, we should get CR quick
<TabAtkins> Rossen_: Anyone need more time to look over test results?
<TabAtkins> Rossen_: In order to move Color 4 to CR? If not we can resolve today
<TabAtkins> Rossen_: Objections for Color 4 CR?
<chrishtr> Congratulations!
<TabAtkins> RESOLVED: Color 4 to CR when timing permits
