Unable to do a fresh install

When I try to install, iget the following error:
Am in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS in Vagrant, on a Mac OS host

$ npm install tailwindcss

I tried this in a new folder (so no previous history).
npm version 6.14.5, the only global package I have is brunch.
I tried installing supports-color by itself, it did not help.

I tried installing tailwindui, and that installed with no issues - but it does not seem to have installed tailwindcss. How do I proceed?

Was able to install with yarn.

Still, could someone tell me what the issue is with npm, and how to fix it?

1. Delete package-lock.json
2. Delete node_modules
3. npm install

If it doesn't work, run npm install -g npm to update npm and repeat the steps above.

I have done as requested. Same error.

Tried twice. Once with deleting package.lock and node_modules and clearing npm cache with -f.
Once with a brand new folder

Looks like you missed npm init

npm commands won't work in uninitialized projects. Try running npm init before npm install

Same difference. This is with a new folder, so no package.json or node_modules before running below commands.

$ npm init

This issue is no longer present in Tailwind 2.
