As one example of a less standard JAVAish use case, AkkaGRPC has a quite good gRPC code generation. The recommended way is to reference a proto-files from a lib/jar.

Also new languages like Rust may benefit from this approach.

can we put the proto files in the generated java lib or should it be a separate package?
