It works in Jupyter and the raw ds.show_hillshade() works in Sphinx, but the app is missing the hillshade visualization.

I think this is related to upstream issues with the toolchain ipympl -> nbconvert -> nbsphinx. Apparently, similar problems have been solved very recently, so it might be worth a shot once the changes are available through Conda packages:
