How to updated the package.json version

I'm trying to commit the new package.json version in my Github Workflow. I was reading the FAQs and came across this:

... the @semantic-release/git plugin can be used to push the updated package.json as well as other files to the Git repository.

How is this done? This is a private repo so I don't care about publishing to NPM but I do need to publish to Docker Hub and I need the version to tag my image.
