I am using pry-rails (including some other gems) in my local development only by creating local (non-project) Gemfile.

Steps to reproduce this,

  1. Create a new local Gemfile under project root, Gemfile.local with below snippets.
eval File.read('Gemfile') # Project's Gemfile
gem 'pry-rails'
  1. Do bundle install --gemfile=Gemfile.local on project root.

  2. rails console - Expected; console should be as pry. But it's not.

  3. But, when you do bundle exec rails console it's working as expected.

  4. After moving the pry-rails to Project's Gemfile, it's working as expected without bundle exec.

Can anyone explain this, why bundle exec required even though all the gems are downloaded in the same place (RVM Gemset)?
