On the base web client for Mastodon, you can click on thumbnails of media from servers your server rejects media from, and it will open the direct file on the server it originates from in a new tab. On pinafore, clicking on the thumbnail simply causes the thumbnail to disappear and be replaced by a broken image placeholder if it's under a content warning, or for an image viewer that doesn't display anything to pop up if it's not.

It would be nice to see either the original behavior replicated, or, possibly, for the media to be embedded from the originating server after a click through warning that your server rejects media from the instance in question.
