Any opportunity to use it without tagging?

Hey! I want to use this action just for "workflow_dispatch" builds, without creating any tags. But right now I see next:

Yeah, you can just provide the tag input argument to it. This can point to an existing tag, or a new one. If it's a new one you can use commit to indicate where the tag should be created from. I think the API works if you don't provide this, though I'm not certain which commit it will use (I'm guessing the HEAD of your primary branch).

Ultimately a github release is tightly coupled with a tag, so you will need to provide some tag to it.

If a tag isn't provided explicitly in the input arguments the action will look for a tag in the git ref (so it expects the action to be running as a result of a tag update). I'm using this action to publish nightly builds, I don't have tags

A release needs to have some tag associated with it. If you are doing nightly builds you could update a tag as part of the job, then pass that tag into the release action later in the workflow (I would probably use the input tag in that case).

Have a script run step which does something like this:

git checkout <your_night_branch>
git tag -f nightly
git push -f origin nightly

Then pass nightly into the release action as the tag argument.
