I receive an answer on docker's subreddit and it refers to the fact that the nexcloud HTTP server (apache in this case) causes heavy write traffic in temp files. I ran As a solution I added the following lines in my docker-compose: ...
tmpfs:
- /run
- /tmp
- /var/cache
... Here is an example of how to use |

Hello,
I run Nexcloud's official docker image using docker-compose. And for storage, I use an
smb/cifs
volume for the application data.Setup
Here are the snippets from the docker-compose file:
The SMB/CIFS server is located inside an open media vault server and indeed the data (uploaded through nextcloud) arrives in it correctly.
All works fine but I have some doubts regarding the data that is written on my ssd drive.
Debug
The container does not create additional volumes and when I check with
$ docker ps -s
the result is
I notice in the last column
SIZE
that only 2.12kB is used for the writable layer so I think all my data that is uploaded (using nextcloud) or used by the container should be inside my volume (On$ docker volume inspect nextcloud_cifs_app_data_mount
I see"Mountpoint": "/var/lib/docker/volumes/nextcloud_cifs_app_data_mount/_data"
.)I have only one disk
/dev/sda
and the docker is running on a partition from this disk.When I check for disk io statistics
$ iostat -dm
Question
I see a lot of GB written on the disk, I run the container inside a VM where no other process should write this magnitude of data except the Nextcloud sync jobs inside the container.
I suspect that these stats are recorded due to the mount location of the docker volume
"Mountpoint": "/var/lib/docker/volumes/nextcloud_cifs_app_data_mount/_data"
which is located under/dev/sda
and my first thought was not to be worried but when I check my SSD Smart data (smartctl --all /dev/sda
) I saw that theLifetime_Writes_GiB
increase at the same rate as my values fromiostat -dm
. I expectLifetime_Writes_GiB
not to increase as the same rate with my nextcloud uploads because all heavy writes should happen on my SMB/CIFS volume.What do I miss?
