Ignore specific files when deploying to github pages

The structure of the docs folder contains a README.md file, which informs any possible contributor about the folder structure and the general styling.

I would now like to ignore this particular file within the deploy/build process of mkdocs, so that it won't be included in the final result on the gh-pages branch.
Is there a command argument or configuration setting which allows me to tell mkdocs to intentionally NOT include and process a file in the docs folder?
