  • Min Version:
    1.30.0
  • Operating system:
    Windows 11 22H2 (OS Build 22621.2715)

Expected Behavior

When I go into Fullscreen mode, YouTube should play smoothly.

Actual Behavior

Sometimes, not always, when I go into fullscreen mode, and only in fullscreen mode, some YouTube videos start lagging even though audio playback is fine. Checking video stats it doesn't say any frames are being lost, and the video has enough of a buffer, so I don't think this is on YouTube's end. A less pronounced version of this can be observed when moving your mouse around in Fullscreen mode as playback freezes for a moment when bringing up the playback menu and when it goes away.

To Reproduce

NOTE: This doesn't always seem to happen, sometimes it will sort itself out, sometimes it will return, it seems to be random with some videos, but it consistently only seems to happen in Fullscreen mode and no other viewing mode.

  • Go to YouTube
  • Open a YouTube video
  • Watch the video for a while to observe the behaviour (Optionally bring up Video Stats)

A small update, I've noticed the same behaviour when scrolling through the video timeline and it showing a preview of the frame. It doesn't seem to always happen, but it's more consistent than the video skipping without it.

This is odd, I don't have any immediate ideas. Does this also happen in Chrome? Are you new to using Min, or did this start happening after an update to a new version?

I'm new to Min, saw it while browsing GitHub and looked really great, plus I liked that it used 2GB less than my previous browser (Firefox) for the same amount of tabs, haha.

On my old browser I didn't notice the issue, it's just odd as it only seems to happen in very particular instances. I'll try reinstalling Firefox and also installing Chrome to see if this is a YouTube/Chrome issue or not. I've tried to get it recorded to show an example but for some reason it always seems to stop at the most inopportune times, haha. It seems to happen the most when I'm moving through a videos timeline (Not actually skipping through footage but mousing over it and seeing the frame previews).

Eventually it does stop, and I know its not to do with the video as if I go back I can see the section playing normally. It's late here so I'll download it all in the morning and let you know what the go is.

Hey @PalmerAL sorry for the wait!

I downloaded Chrome and gave it a go, it seems to not be affecting me on Chrome. Where I can't always get the slowdown issue when I'm moving through the frames or just playing the video normally, one consistent way to cause slowdown is when moving the mouse in fullscreen mode and the playback menu appears/disappears. It is very brief so it's easy to miss, but for a small amount of time I notice things stop when the playback menu initially comes up and when it closes, almost like its being bogged down trying to load and unload the menu. I tried a bunch of things on Chrome regular but I never experienced the same slowdown issue.

I thought perhaps it could just be the build as I understand that sometimes you may have a better experience building on your own machine than a pre-built binary so I tried building my own and the same issue still persisted it seems.

I thought I should maybe share some specs of my machine as perhaps it's just got to do with my hardware as it's definitely something on my side only it seems:

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor (3.7GHz, 12 cores, 24 threads)
  • AMD Radeon RX 6600 (8GB, Driver version 21.0.23013.1023, Driver date 28/11/2023, DirectX version 12 (FL 12.1))
  • 32GB of DDR4 RAM (2400MHz)

I don't believe it is my connection being spotty as the video is still playing back, and YouTube reports no frames lost.
