A curious "Properties as Variable" misinterpretation.
Basically he's expecting (as I can guess) Less will read actual background property from a unknown * HTML element of a run-time page.
It's not that in the current documentation it's is not clear in that sense (it is - if you know Less has nothing to do with HTML pages), but still it would not harm to stress it's all about properties explicitly specified in the same CSS/Less code and not properties of HTML elements (of the page you apply your compiled CSS to - whatever ridiculous that may sound).

Oh interesting. Yeah, I wouldn't have thought that was necessary to clarify, but might as well.
