Using conventional commits with independent lerna version

I'm attempting to set up a mono repo where all my packages have independent versions, but all packages are using the conventional commit style messages.

When I come to run the version command I run into an error:

What am I expecting to happen?
Ideally it would be great if I could run one lerna version command and it determine the versions to bump the packages independently. The version documentation says nothing about how it should act for independent versions or that it would cause an error.
