So should i implement likes and then use the signals to report to activity stream that user liked this or that. Or i dont need to build the likes app and simply use this? I am a little confused on this.

Follow model has a flag field that can mark a follow as any type, such as like, favorite, watch, start etc. This feature hasn't been documented yet, so read the source code if you want to use it.
