The error message I was seeing is this:
"An unknown error occurred while loading this notebook. This version can load notebook formats or earlier. See the server log for details."
The problem was actually that I accidentally used up all space on the drive. It would be better if it reported that it could not write to disk. To make it worse, the dialog will close the browser tab. Imagine if you got a 404 or 503 error and it just closes your browser window. I did learn eventually that I don't have to close the dialog, which caused the tab to close.
Also, someone should clarify what that message is currently saying for the case it was written for. "can load notebook formats or earlier" --> ?
Thanks

Hey there, @ldmtwo, I am sorry we never got around to replying to you, but I'm going through old issues and it seems to me that it makes sense to close this one, as it's pretty stale now. This wording used to live in the notebook repository, but with the move to Notebook v7 it no longer has this message (though perhaps the faulty behavior remains).
