It would be nice to automatically see its annotations when visiting a page that has some. The plugin already shows in its icon that annotations are there, so it should be relatively easily possible and remove a bit of friction.

I have considered a PR which adds a setting that launches it automatically on pages that are typed as a article (for twitter embeds)

How would you classify this? What speaks against launching when there are annotations or just always?

Launching when there are annotations

It's entirely possible we use the software in different ways, but I largely only open it when I intend to annotate. There's substantial friction in clicking the icon, and I don't think this would fix it (because I am often the first person to annotate). I mean, actually it would be nice to see others if they are there, but open any random website and there are stupid annotations (like google or instagram)

or just always?

Plenty of problems with this approach. If it's always open, it could conflict with tooltips. It could show highlights in places they really shouldn't be, like search engines or timelines. The sidebar is ugly.
