I've created this extension quite recently, so it isn't really battle-tested yet, nor used at all.

It should work fine with the sphinx_material theme, but it doesn't work yet with the RTD theme on RTD. Maybe you could have a look at mgeier/sphinx-last-updated-by-git#1 and readthedocs/sphinx_rtd_theme#897?
