Not entirely sure what the right thing to do here is.

Keep about:tracing in mind; whatever we do we'll want to be able to output different trees with ids so chrome tracing can place them in the unmerged section.

Note that this isn't resume per se. We have the same problem right now if our start, stop pairs cross function boundaries, as we are very likely to want to do.
