Only delete can remove data from a map?

I tried drop mapping statement and if I recreated same mapping after dropping, the original data still exist in the mapping. Is it the expected behaviour?
Also, I tried to use create or replace statement, the data with on change on the column exist as well. Is that right?
I thought the two cases will erase the data in that mapping anyway. Thanks.
