<p class="articleTitle" style="margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px;">Two Men, Two Ways<br>
To Speak Computerese</p>
<p class="times">They live a few dozen miles from each other, have strikingly different
backgrounds and world views, but in their own separate ways they have
created computer languages among the most important in the world.</p>
<p class="times">Larry Wall and Guido van Rossum are the driving forces behind Perl and
Python, respectively. If you haven't heard of any of them, it's because you
don't run a Web site, write server software, or toil in the many other
fields where both men and their creations have enormous and very zealous
followings.</p>
<p class="times">Perl and Python are free and freely modified "open source" software,
just like the better-known Linux operating system. Mr. Wall, 48, and Mr.
von Rossum, 47, each started working on his language in the 1980s, a few
years before Linus Torvalds began Linux. In all three cases, what began as
a hobby grew into a global phenomenon.</p>
<p class="times">Perl and Python are considered scripting languages, a category whose
story has a "Little Engine That Could" quality to it.</p>
<p class="times">These languages have been around since the very early days of computers.
At first, they were limited to rudimentary tasks, like starting and
stopping other much larger programs written in real languages. The most
famous example of a scripting language is the autoexec.bat batch file of
DOS and Windows fame.</p>
<p class="times">Over the past decade, though, scripting languages have come to rival
full-blown languages such as C and Java in power and performance. But
they've kept the ease of use that was their main attraction in the first
place. Hence their popularity.</p>
<p class="times">While they are used for many things, you probably wouldn't write, say, a
big graphics-intensive computer game in them because it would probably run
too slowly. Be warned, though, that any such statement about the alleged
unsuitability of Perl or Python for a particular task is likely to generate
instant flame mails, not from Mr. Wall or Mr. van Rossum, who tend to be
insouciant about these matters, but from some of their more die-hard
followers.</p>
<p class="times">Computer-science departments tend to frown on scripting languages,
saying they encourage bad programming habits. Their tut-tut attitude is the
kind you'd expect from carpentry teachers if someone started selling kits
that let people build houses without knowing know how to plumb a door.</p>
<p class="times">As the most popular of all the scripting languages, Perl and Python
compete with each other for mind share among the same communities of
programmers. The competition is good-natured, like the fake-Buddhist Python
Web site that tells how "the origin of suffering lies in the use of
not-Python."</p>
<p class="times">Lay people often don't appreciate it, but computer languages have
distinct personalities, much like human languages. Perl is famous for being
permissive, with no right or wrong way of accomplishing a task. Python, by
contrast, is considered more rigid and exacting.</p>
<p class="times">Those descriptions are the opposite of what you'd expect from the
inventors' bios. The Dutch-born Mr. van Rossum started working on the
my-way-or-the-highway Python as a typical resident of the famously
freewheeling city of Amsterdam. About his approach to Python, Mr. van
Rossum says that if there is a clearly right way of doing something, why
mess it up with alternatives?</p>
<p class="times">By contrast, Mr. Wall, the gatekeeper of the undogmatic Perl, is a
devout evangelical Christian. "God doesn't enforce morality on us, but
prefers to let us choose it," he says. "And if we are created in God's
image, we ought to extend the same courtesy."</p>
<p class="times">Besides choice, Mr. Wall also brings to his work a playful erudition.
His yearly reports on the state of Perl development, available at
<a class="times" href="http://www.perl.com/">www.perl.com</a>, are known for their Nabokovian wit.</p>
<p class="times">Perl and Python aren't the only scripting languages; there are also PHP
and Ruby and TCL and many more. That variety is another of the many
differences between open source and for-profit software. Most companies
will kill a product if it isn't No. 1 or No. 2 in a big market. But in open
source, software lives on if there are enough believers to keep it
alive.</p>
<p class="times">Microsoft often likes to question the viability of open source, but the
futures of both Python and Perl appear secure, thanks largely to Sugar
Daddies who support the inventors.</p>
<p class="times">Mr. van Rossum moved to the U.S. in 1995, and married a Texas
martial-arts instructor. They have a young son, and have just relocated to
Foster City, Calif., 15 miles south of San Francisco. Mr. van Rossum
recently began work at Elemental Security, a computer-security
start-up.</p>
<p class="times">Mr. Wall is married with four children, and lives in nearby Mountain
View. He just finished a gig at the nonprofit Perl Foundation, and is
currently in search of a new patron.</p>
<p class="times">These days, his main project is a massive, multiyear reworking of the
entire Perl language. "I made some bad decisions early on," he explains.
"But then, every language designer does. The trick is to make different
mistakes as you get older."</p>
