Using Checkout() does not seem to mimic the behaviour of git checkout branch

I am trying to mimic the behaviour of the git checkout branch command when there are files on the current branch that have not been commited. Normally what you would expect is to see something like the following:

❯ git status

On branch throw-away
Changes not staged for commit:
  (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed)
  (use "git restore <file>..." to discard changes in working directory)
	modified:   builder.go
	modified:   main.go
	modified:   model.go
	modified:   tabbycat

no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a")

❯ git checkout master

error: Your local changes to the following files would be overwritten by checkout:
	builder.go
	main.go
	model.go
	tabbycat
Please commit your changes or stash them before you switch branches.
Aborting

However, with my current setup in Go I seem to bypass this error message and checkout a new branch despite not commiting or stashing my existing changes. I've included the essential workflow that I am following below, but if necessary I can try to create a minimum working example if I have more time. It's unclear to me if this is a bug, or if I am missing a step.

I have done a little bit more exploring and I think to get this behaviour it needs to be combined with a Status() check first, and then you need to bail before the checkout. Still investigating, but I would sort of think that Checkout() should bail if there are uncommited changes on the current branch if Force and/or Keep is false.
