Self-Host GitHub Codespaces?

Will there ever be plans to allow for self-hosting of GitHub's codespaces going forward into the future?

My organisation would greatly appreciate this as many systems which would be nice to have in codespaces heavily use UDP and TCP on private networks so the applications need to run locally.

To clarify, does the codespace need to be completely hosted on this private network (akin to an air gapped system or would some traffic outside this private network be acceptable?) Does the codespace just need to be able to access resources on-prem?

in my case, the codespace can communicate with the internet in limited ways, and does not need to be air-gapped. my LAN doesn't have complete access to the internet, and any existing restrictions can be removed to make the product work and ensure its functionality.

For my use case, has to be entirely on internal network for security reasons. My use case is for controls software to control scientific instruments as part of a synchrotron over UDP or TCP through a framework called EPICS.

Indeed. Based upon the architecture dependency graph of Codespaces, Azure Stack would likely be the only way to make GitHub Codespaces (Visual Studio Online) work on-prem. I wouldn't be surprised if GitHub Enterprise (on-prem) over the long-term was sunsetted and replaced with https://docs.github.com/en/github-ae@latest/admin/overview/about-github-ae but I'm speculating on that one...

Personally, we use GHES for some things and would require it to be fully within our network for us to use it. I would absolutely love the feature to self-host this just like a runner or in a Kubernetes cluster. I believe that GitLab has a similar feature in beta right now for their Web IDE but it doesn't fill the same space as codespaces IMO.

A separate but useful thing would be a Codespaces gateway that we could deploy for our teams that work on GH Enterprise Cloud to be able to access our internal resources. We already have precedence deploying a similar thing for PowerBI,

I'm already self hosting my build agents and lots of other stuff so I already have capable hardware that's perfect for this. So I don't see why I should also pay for cloud compute and worry about costs when I already have my own servers running that are already paid for. Self hosting would be great.

Self hosting also means that whatever application I'm working on can access databases that I already have on premises so I wouldn't have to cloud host development databases either.
