sms at script fails

I am using a multi sim card device with gammu. When trying to interact with sms, gammu just outputs "unknown error",

According to strace, the command AT+CPMS=? fails. I've verified that the preceding command AT+CFUN=1 causes AT+CPMS=? to error. Using ATZ makes AT+CPMS=? work again.

After this error, gammu tries to use the message store ME but this doesn't exist on my device (preferred storage is SM)

Is there a way to either change the default store or adjust the script gammu uses?
