The idea is that the user would be able to store a variety of defaults in their account, and that we would use those defaults in certain ways in the UI.
It seems to me that it would be best to have account defaults for things such as the page size, page orientation, SA, etc. These would then be used when a new pattern is created.
However, when these values are changed for a specific pattern, it would feel natural for them to be saved together with the pattern. Some patterns may fit way better on A3 pages, while others are fine on A4, and the same goes for page orientation. Since this usually depends on the pattern, it makes sense for the values to be saved together with it. Another reason is the scenario of updating the pattern. When creating something new, the first version is usually not perfect right away, so the user may want to return, edit the pattern slightly, and print again. Sometimes it even takes several iterations before the pattern is final and it feels very strange to keep on changing the print settings from the defaults each time.
What is it that you would like to see happen? 馃

It's something I've thought about before, but I should credit @PetrDobes for bringing it to our attention again in #5911
