Prerequisites checklist

What is the purpose of this pull request? (put an "X" next to an item)

  • Documentation update

What changes did you make? (Give an overview)

Switch from the 🛠 (hammer and wrench) to 🔧 (wrench) emoji to represent auto-fixable rules.

Why?

  • The wrench could be considered simpler, "less busy", and a "more straightforward" emoji to indicate the desired meaning
  • I used eslint-ecosystem-analyzer to count usages of each emoji across the top 1,000 ESLint plugins, and found the wrench to be vastly more popular:
Emoji Number of Files in Top 1,000 ESLint Plugins
🔧 607
🛠 15

As a result of the greater popularity of the wrench emoji, I have also adopted it in eslint-doc-generator which is used in the top 15+ ESLint plugins (example output).

This is a great opportunity to finish standardizing the entire ESLint ecosystem on the wrench emoji by adopting it inside ESLint core as well.

Is there anything you'd like reviewers to focus on?

Makes sense to me too, but would like @nzakas to confirm, as we were already using 🔧 on the old site so there could be a reason why we switched to 🛠.

We switched because we thought the new emoji was a lot clearer than the old one. The old one can be a little bit difficult to discern as a wrench.

I rather like the new one for that reason, but if the consensus is to go back to the old one that's fine with me.

Hmm, I had the exact opposite reaction. The 🔧 has a single, larger wrench in it, compared to 🛠 which has the two smaller tools in it that I considered more difficult to discern.

I rather like the new one for that reason, but if the consensus is to go back to the old one that's fine with me.

There seems to be a good amount of support on this PR, and I imagine many plugin authors would agree, given that 🔧 already has widespread adoption in plugins. At least, it would be the easier path forward toward my goal of standardizing plugin documentation.

It also depends on the OS and browser that you use. They can look very different. The only reason for the change was aesthetics. I’ll leave it to y’all to decide amongst yourselves.

For reference, this site shoes how each emoji looks on different platforms:
