I'm experiencing some unexpected behaviour when using The following code demonstrates the problem. The expected behaviour is:

When I run your modified version I get: This is on Linux, Python 3.11.8, httpx 0.27.0. (That's a different OS and slightly different Python to the original post) |

Hmm. This may be an issue with another dependency in my environment. I tried to creating a fresh virtual environment and it works as expected. I'll try to narrow it down... |

OK. I've found the problematic dependency. Another package in my environment was depending on
anyio==3.7.1which is not the latestanyio==4.3.0. If I upgrade that package the exception goes away. 😕
