With the guid system for posts, I can't think of any further use for the original pod-specific post numbering system that starts with 1 on each pod and numbers posts chronologically from then on.
I propose to deprecate this numbering system in favour of the guid, so that no new content is assigned this additional numbering system. Obviously, existing posts that have already been assigned a pod-specific post number should keep that number so that existing links using the number will still work. But I this numbering system should stop being assigned to future content.
Is there any reason to keep this numbering system in addition to the guid system?
