Protector generates empty dumps

A standard setup of protector works locally in my VM instance, but does not work on the remote Debian server.
artisan protector:import, and artisan protector:export on the server both yield a file that just carries a newline and the meta information.

There is no error shown on either system, so it's not clear what's going wrong.
