I can't control what VSCode uses to run the container, only the executable between I guess podman not being a drop replacement for docker makes it unusable for devcontainers for now. |

Late reply, but thanks @shanesmith that indeed was the issue, I had to hunt down documentation on how to do that with Test Containers. Thanks for pointing me in the direct direction. Like most things it makes sense in hindsight. |

You do not need to run --privileged you could disable SELinux for the container. podman run --security-opt label:disabled |

Hi @holly-cummins, this is not the correct solution for Test Containers. It's not clearly stated in their documentation, but you just need to tell Test Containers to start the Ryuk container in privileged mode. https://www.testcontainers.org/features/configuration/#customizing-ryuk-resource-reaper
You would add this in your Running Test Containers without Ryuk can lead to serious issues, because containers that are started are never automatically stopped/cleaned up. I hope this helps others, after realising that podman required containers to be privileged to mount the docker socket, I had to go hunting to understand how to make Test Containers do this. It would have been nice if they said "hey if you're using podman, enable this bit of configuration or things won't work". |

I like @aaronjwhiteside's answer so much, since it's so much cleaner than disabling ryuk... but it didn't work for me. I tried both

... but it didn't resolve the issue. I have a feeling that some extra step combined with that property setting would do the trick - maybe my test containers is ignoring the config because of how it's being run? Maybe I need rootful podman? I can confirm (doh!) that I do see issues with cleanup being missed because of blanket-disabling ryuk. |

I've been following @holly-cummins #14238 (reply in thread) suggestions also specifically from this stackoverflow answer. But at least on Mac and using TestContainers for Go I also need to specify is Hope this might help someone, or happy to hear comments |

Just my 5 cents: Was also fighting with the podman bugs on macOS and it turned out to do all podman stuff via Parallels takes almost half less resources on Mac, is free and also no such bugs. |

Description
When trying to use the VSCode Remote container extension with podman, one of the commands that is executed tries to use the
/var/run/docker.sockfile to mount a volume. That file has different file permission than the original podman socket it is being liked to:This is causing the command to fail with permission denied. I believe that symlink should have the same permissions as the original file.
Steps to reproduce the issue:
podman run -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock vsc-volume-bootstrapwith any valid container.Describe the results you received:
