<p>Chardet is a Python port of the C++ <a href="https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/bc7deafdac4b/extensions/universalchardet">universal character encoding detector from Mozilla</a>.</p>

<p>Chardet is <a href="https://pypi.python.org/pypi/chardet">available on PyPI</a> and can be installed via <a href="https://pip.pypa.io/en/latest/">pip</a>:</p>

<p>Chardet was originally ported from C++ by Mark Pilgrim (<a href="https://github.com/diveintomark" class="user-mention">@diveintomark</a>). It is now maintained by Dan Blanchard (<a href="https://github.com/dan-blanchard" class="user-mention">@dan-blanchard</a>) and Ian Cordasco (<a href="https://github.com/sigmavirus24" class="user-mention">@sigmavirus24</a>), and was formerly maintained by Erik Rose (<a href="https://github.com/erikrose" class="user-mention">@erikrose</a>).</p>
