Berty product

Mobile app

Feature request

Berty already supports storing images and files by sending them to a group. It would be nice to be able to store images and files independent of a group in a vault/password manager style. It would also be nice to be able to share documents / images with individual contacts outside of a specific group.

Context

Similar to #4657, this is about adding secure p2p document storage that is easy for the end user to use. It could evolve into a fully fledged password manager, or remain a simple way to securely transfer documents between your own devices.

Possible implementation

Hello @jreamy. For the moment, Berty Messenger doesn't support file attachments. We are focusing on the core features needed to release version 1.0 . We're focusing on secure communication and are not attempting to create a WhatsApp replacement with all the features.

At some point we may implement file attachments in Berty Messenger. A "group" can be a group of two, with just you and the other contact. In that case you could send a message with the file attachment. The encryption key is associated with the group. (This is a security feature.) Since the attachment is encrypted with the group-based key, there is no support for sharing "the file" outside the group. Anyone who wants the group encryption key needs to join the group. And because of "forward secrecy", the new group member can't see old messages (or attachments). Again, this is part of the security design. You would need to send the message again to the group after the other member joins.

Due to the security design mentioned above, Berty Messenger will not be implementing a "share document" feature. Do you want to clarify the feature, or can we close the issue?

Closing as won't implement, with explanation why not.
