Category icons are lost using /usr/share/awesome/lib/menubar

How to reproduce the issue:

Use the automated menu building features in /usr/share/awesome/lib/menubar with for example https://github.com/lcpz/awesome-freedesktop

Actual result:

The menu does not show any category icons.

Expected result:

The menu should show category icons.

For some reason the /usr/share/icons/hicolor//categories/ directories are now empty, so one has to install an icon theme like Numix, Adwaita etc. to get category icons.
