I could reproduce the same error without astropy, so I reported it upstream here:

• [Bug]: fill_between gives IndexError with numpy 1.24.0.dev matplotlib/matplotlib#24106

This issue can be closed without further action if the fix is indeed upstream but we should wait until our CI for that job is green again before we close this out.

Upstream fix matplotlib/matplotlib#24115 is merged but might take a few days for us to see it.
