Navigation menus to the browse mode sidebar WordPress/gutenberg#46436

Please note that this was left outside the 6.2 version (although it is still part of the plugin).

@mrfoxtalbot Yes some things have been moved out of 6.2. I created this task list before that so feel free to skip the ones that dont go with the 6.2. Thanks so much

Diving into this with the remainder of my day. I'll see how far I get and whether I need to pass onto @mrfoxtalbot! Updates to come but taking over assignment for now.

Notes for future reference -- the bulk of the changes revolve around introducing "browse mode" which is the technical project name for a reimagined site editor experience. This changes how you add templates and template parts as well as providing ways to "preview" templates before editing them. Since many of these things touch on Styles and the Template Editor, which I've edited in the last 24 hours, I'm going to make some judgement calls on what to include focusing on the following:

  • Updated the numbered site editor toolbar, since the block settings icon has changed.
  • Updated the video under "The Site Editor workspace" to reflect browse mode.
  • Updated Inserter visual for adding a new block to include the Media tab.
  • Updated the video under "7. Templates: The name of the template you are editing." This video was really rough. We shouldn't have published this.
  • Removed references to "Areas" under the top toolbar since that was removed Remove "Areas" from template details dropdown gutenberg#48487.
  • Updated the video for "Settings: Show or hide the Template and Block Settings sidebar menu." since it impacts the block settings icon change.
  • Updated various screenshots to reflect the new block settings icon.
  • Updated video for Styles in light of new block settings icon.
  • Replaced the "To browse the templates and template parts" video with the earlier one I created for the "The Site Editor workspace" since it seemed to use the same video from there.
  • Updated the "To manage the site's templates" to discuss the new experience and explain how to get back to it.
  • Updated return to dashboard section to include browse mode and added a video in for good measure.
  • Under Useful tools when using the Site Editor, I added the copy/paste styles, apply globally options, and the ability to resize the sidebar Allow resizing the sidebar and frame of the site editor gutenberg#46903
  • Removed mentions of "beta" and updated any screenshots that included that mention.
  • Updated the flow for each set of directions to include browse mode related changes.

@mrfoxtalbot I had to draw a line at some point with updating everything due to the change in the block settings icon. Mind doing a sweep to catch the remaining items? I got the main items done but there are some videos/screenshots that could use an update to reflect the change to do due diligence. On a related note, can you update the best doc you can think of for both the "apply globally" and copy/paste styles option? I don't know where it makes the most sense today and trust your instincts more!

Closing this out for now as the bulk is done.

I am going over this one now, @annezazu. Thank you!

I have updated the remaining screencasts to replace the block setttings icon. I also re-did a couple of videos that failed to upload/save.

can you update the best doc you can think of for both the "apply globally" and copy/paste styles option?

I am not sure what you mean by this, @annezazu. Are you referring to locating a different article where this topic is discussed and update it? Could you please clarify? Thank you!

Whoa which videos failed to upload? That's not good (and I didn't get any indication of that in the editor last night).

Are you referring to locating a different article where this topic is discussed and update it? Could you please clarify? Thank you!

Where else would those features be worthwhile to mention? That's my question. It feels odd to bury them in the Site Editor as, at least for the copy/paste styles option, that exists in the block editor too.

Whoa which videos failed to upload?

Apologies for the late reply @annezazu. I remember that it was just a couple of them, I could not tell you which ones.

Where else would those features be worthwhile to mention?

Thank you for clarifying. I would say the Global Styles article is where it would make the most sense. I have commented on #675 to reopen it if needed.

Related to this, @kathrynwp and I have been thinking that we should prioritize updating the "General" CSS article. We should make it very clear in that article how there are a lot of things that no longer require CSS and encourage users to try Global Styles and other tools. This is being tracked on #424
