iOS - No Language Set for "Español", "Français", and "Malay" in Menu and First Screen

The word for Spanish "Español" ( lang="es" ) and the word for French "Français" ( lang="fr" ) should each have the proper language set for them in the menu and on the home page the first time you are there, so they are pronounced properly for the screen reader user.

Please add a SPAN around each of the words using the code for the languages listed after them above.

The page language should be set to English ( lang="en" ).

Also, when the user first enters the application, it lists the three languages on the screen until you choose one. So those have to have the proper language set.

ZTI, can we please fix and ensure this fix is applied across the application wherever these language selectors are present? Please ensure that thse are applied in the Spanish and French versions as well.

The first paragraph is implemented: the tags are in place on the Splash screen.

Further down there is the comment: The page language should be set to English ( lang="en" ).

The page tag already has the language attribute set.

This appears to be already in place. Is there some particular detail that I am missing?

The last comment on the defect seems to be a repeat of the defect itself. Is this suppose to mean all language buttons should be verified to have tags?

What I'm saying is that for the English pages, any other language on there needs to be marked as that language, be it Spanish or French.

If the page is for Spanish, all English and French words need to be marked as the correct language and similar for the French pages needing English and Spanish marked for that language.

Doing so allows screen readers and other assistive technology to pronounce the text of the different language correctly.

By not having any language set for the entire page will then default to the person's screen readers' language. So if the person is a Spanish speaking screen reader user and comes to your English text with no language set, it will read the English words with a Spanish accent and much faster.

VoiceOver is still not reading each of the language buttons with the proper accent for Spanish, French, and Malay. They are all being read with an English accent instead of the proper language.

To correct the issue you should add lang="es" to "Español", lang="fr" to "Français", and lang="ms" to Malay buttons.

The same applies to the full pages for those languages or parts of other pages that have them on them. If there is English on one of those pages it would need lang="en".

The language is not set to the proper one for the button listed below on the first screen when a user opens the application for the first time to pick a language.

• lang="es" to "Español"
• lang="fr" to "Français"
• lang="ms" to "Malay"

The same problem applies to these items in the drop-down Menu.

Even if I change the language to one of these, VoiceOver reads them as if they were English. I assume that if this is the case for the iOS application, it also applies to the Android and web versions too.

This is a known iOS issue. After researching online resources I found out that - a) A lot of people are facing these issues and b) It was actually better in the previous versions - before iOS 10.

Now if you are on a Mac using VO and trying to read language other than the system language, what happens is that - another voice starts reading the different language in correct accent. For example If Mac chosen language is English and it tries to read Spanish, a second language starts reading Spanish in correct accent with the English language still announcing headings, links and buttons.

iOS has the same functionality, just doesn't work. If you go into accessibility setting, you can add a new language different than the system language to read out text in different languages but it doesn't work.

So let's leave this open to make sure to check with new iOS updates/patches to see if it gets corrected.

While checking the different languages with the screen readers (JAWS, VoceOver, and TalkBack), it seems that the TalkBack on Android is reading the French and Malay languages in English.

For any of the languages on Android, TalkBack is reading the back link's twice and possibly on the other devices too (iOS and web). I guess it's reading the SVG left-pointing arrow and then the link text too when swiping through the items on the screen. I noticed this because, for the non-English screens, it was reading the English words for them.

Not sure if there is a way not to read them twice or change them in the correct language. Some of the ARIA attributes do not get translated/changed from one language to a different language when switching. It might be the aria-label, aria-labelledby, aria-describedby, or something else ARIA.

I will recheck this when the latest build comes out so I can check the main language page when the application first loads.

TalkBack is still reading the French and Malay text with an English accent. We need to look at this in more detail.
